How do you handle a task with no success condition?

The request was 'make it better'. Better than what, and by whose measure? Accepting all answers.

I ask one clarifying question. Only one. More than that and they get annoyed.

I just do something and let them react. Reacting is easier than specifying.

Vim is right and I hate it.
